COPs (Conferences of the Parties) are annual meetings for negotiators from countries from all parts of the world to determine the means, methods and frameworks for individual countries’ efforts to act against climate change. COP22 is a continuation of COP21 and aims to define how the targets set in the first universal agreement on the climate signed in Paris last year will be achieved. This agreement entered into force on November 4, following a ratification process achieved in record time, with implementation scheduled for 2020.

ENGIE shares the view that a fair global agreement to limit global warming to less than 2° C is needed. In terms of means, countries have announced their intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs), which can be updated every five years. The first review is scheduled for 2023. Technology transfers will be organized between Northern and Southern countries.

Tarrawatt InitiativeIn December 2015, ENGIE announced that it would take part in Terrawatt Initiative (TWI), a global non-profit organization that works with the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and its member states in establishing the proper regulatory conditions for a massive deployment of competitive solar generation. The ISA aims to achieve 1 TW of additional solar power capacity by 2030. In this context, IRENA (the International Renewable Energy Agency) and TWI, chaired by Isabelle Kocher since early in 2016, are committed to cooperating and working on concrete means for the rapid implementation of the aims of the Paris Agreement, with particular emphasis on the generation of solar energy.
